Day 2, “Hutong”
Before China had built all the skyscraper apartment building in the cities, the people lived in single story homes. A few of these neighborhoods still exist today, and mostly the retired generation live here.
For lunch, we went to Hutong to visit a family who still lives in the single story homes. The homes are huddled together along narrow alleyways, and remind me of the older adobe homes you’d see in Valparaiso, Zacatecas.
This trip has been a much different traveling experience than what I’m used to given that I’m actually with a tour group. Instead of hanging with the locals and eating at small hole in the walls, we follow a tight schedule of tourist sights and buffet meals.
This was more my speed as we got to actually have lunch in their home, visit with the couple, and eat an amazing meal they whipped up in their itty bitty kitchen. If my Grandma Coco knew how to make Chinese food, this is what it would taste like.
